Thank you so much for submitting your idea – unfortunately, this time it didn’t reach the threshold of 25 votes to be presented to our student council. We appreciate that access to technology is a big barrier to engaging with online learning so we would encourage any student who finds themselves in financial hardship to apply to the existing university hardship fund https://portal1.chester.ac.uk/studentsupport/Pages/financial-support-financial-hardship.aspx alternatively you can email money@chester.ac.uk for some more info or speak to someone. With the impact of COVID more and more students are relying their only lecture access to be on an old mobile phone. Many students also do not have the facilities to download Microsoft Office as well as other software unavailable on devices such as a smartphone. With borrowed laptops from the university, as well as library access now being limited many students are falling behind and missing out due to a financial situation totally out of their control. The university should be aiding these students in the form of a bursary to buy a laptop to allow them to complete basic work that they should not be deprived of due to background or situation.
