Tom scott farewell

As our current Officers come to the end of their time as leaders of Chester Students' Union, they are reflecting on their year in office, talking about their achievements and favourite part about being your representatives. First up is Tom Scott, your 2023-24 Vice President Student Life.

After three years as an undergraduate at the University of Chester and one year of being your VP Student Life, my time in Chester has come to an end. I am grateful for the memories, friends and experiences that CSU and the University has given me, and I want to thank the CSU team, the University, The SES department, the students, and the AU in particular. What a year we had, with events like Welcome Week, Frost Fair, Elections, Varsity, Chestival and the various awards ceremonies. As your student leader, I've been busy at the CSU with committees, campaigns, and getting involved with all aspects of student life!

I'm proud of the start we made with the Take Time Before You Sign campaign, where we made landlords and letting agencies angry by campaigning for students to have more time before being made to sign unbreakable rental contracts. I've also loved getting involved with society events and sports, especially during Varsity! Increasing the number of societies was a goal of mine, so I was so pleased when I found out we had managed to increase society membership to 1000 student members across over 50 societies!

I wish all the staff at the CSU, including the new Sabbatical Officers, the very best of luck. I am sad to be leaving, of couse, but I felt like it was the right time for me to move on and begin my teacher training at Edge Hill. As I said at my graduation, I will always be a part of the University of Chester, and the University of Chester will always be a part of me. And of course, I had to end on a quote from Jurgen Klopp: "it's not important what people think when you come in, it's much more important what people think when you leave."
