While at Uni, we often find ourselves juggling multiple responsibilities, and it’s so easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of deadlines that we forget one crucial thing: self-care. It’s often the first thing to overlook, but it is so important for our mental and physical wellbeing, especially during stressful times.
With Wellbeing Week returning next week, I’m taking this chance to remind you to prioritise yourself first, recognise the signs of burnout, and implement simple practices that can make a huge difference to your overall health.
Self-care is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. While it may seem like you're being productive by always pushing yourself, you’re actually neglecting yourself and could be leading towards burnout.
My top tips for self-care
1. Get Enough Sleep
Sleep is essential and helps us function as normal humans. Yet many students sacrifice sleep to finish assignments or even hit the streets of Chester on a Wednesday night. Your body and mind needs between 7-8 hours of sleep each night so start to establish a calming bedtime routine to help your body wind down.
2. Exercise Regularly
Exercise is a powerful stress-buster. It increases endorphins, which improve mood, reduce stress, and boost energy. Whether it’s yoga, a brisk walk, or a quick workout session, regular physical activity can significantly improve your focus and overall well-being. Remember, it doesn’t have to be long—just 20 minutes a day can make a difference. You could even join a sports team here at the University of Chester, check out the Athletics Union to see what they have to offer and see what is going on with active campus.
3. Eat Well
Nourishing your body with wholesome food is a fundamental part of self-care. Avoid the temptation of fast food, I know it’s so easily done when you are so busy but try to make choices that fuel your body with everything you need.
4. Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness and meditation can help clear your mind, reduce anxiety, and increase focus. Take just a few minutes each day to sit quietly, breathe deeply, and centre yourself. Check out our Instagram @CSUOFFICERTEAM where I will be showing you all the spots in Chester to get your moments peace.
5. Set Boundaries
As a student, you may often feel the need to say “yes” to every opportunity, but learning to say “no” when necessary is an important self-care practice. Set healthy boundaries with your time and energy to avoid overwhelming yourself with too many commitments.
6. Stay Connected
Whether it’s through virtual or in-person meetups, staying connected with friends, family, or even support groups is crucial. Social interactions provide emotional support, alleviate feelings of loneliness, and remind you that you’re not in this alone. If you are struggling to make friends or start conversations don’t worry you are not alone, maybe join a society to meet likeminded people, check out the opportunities tile on the website for more information.
7. Unplug from Technology
Constant notifications and endless scrolling can add to your stress. Make time each day to disconnect from technology—especially before bedtime. Use this time for hobbies, reading, or simply relaxing without distractions.
8. Practice Gratitude
In the hustle of academic life, it’s easy to overlook the positives. Try incorporating gratitude into your daily routine by jotting down three things you're thankful for each day. This simple practice can help shift your mindset, reduce stress, and boost your mental health.
Make Self-Care a Priority
Self-care isn’t selfish—it’s essential. By making time for your physical, mental, and emotional health, you will be better equipped to face the challenges of student life. Prioritise yourself, and you’ll see the difference in how you feel.
We encourage all students to start small. Whether it’s taking a 10-minute break during study sessions, going to bed 30 minutes earlier, or making time for a hobby you enjoy—every little step counts toward better self-care.
Hopefully this blog has been useful, there is so much going on over Wellbeing week so check out what you can get involved in. I'll be posting about self-care all week on Instagram, so make sure to follow us there!
